In most cases
of the hair loss disorder Alopecia, the hair from the scalp falls out in small
round patches. However, in more severe cases, a consequence of the condition
can be total hair loss from the head, face and body.
How many people are affected by Alopecia?
Approximately 1.7 % of the population suffers from Alopecia and
both men and women in this group are equally affected. About 25% of sufferers
have a family history of Alopecia.
What causes Alopecia?
Alopecia is considered to be a disease of the auto-immune system.
The immune system usually protects the body against infection and disease. In
cases of an auto-immune disease, the immune system attacks parts of the sufferer's
own body.
In the case of Alopecia, it is believed that the hair follicles
from which the hair grows are attacked by the immune system. In some cases,
it is also thought that a genetic element may be involved and studies have demonstrated
that the condition may be linked to stress.
How medical tattooing can provide a long
term solution?
Alopecia sufferers often express feelings of low self-worth. This situation
can be very much improved with the use of medical tattooing which provides a
natural looking, durable camouflage to the results of the condition, by creating
the optical illusion of hair growth.
Eyebrow loss
For those who have lost their eyebrows medical tattooing creates the illusion
of ultra fine eyebrow hairs in a 3-dimensional effect that achieves remarkably
realistic results.
Eyelash loss
For those who have sparse or no eyelashes medical tattooing can
achieve a make-up effect or a defined outline which gives natural definition
to the eyes. The advantage of this is of course that it removes the need to
constantly re-apply make-up.
