Cleft lip or palate

What is cleft lip or palate?

In the early weeks of foetal development, the right and left sides of the baby's lip and roof of the mouth typically grow together. But, for approximately 1 in 800 babies, these sections don't totally meet. Children born with this sort of upper lip separation are said to have a "cleft lip". The same type of birth defect occurring in the roof of the mouth, or palate, is called a "cleft palate".

Cleft lip or palate reconstructive surgery

For children born with either a cleft lip or palate, reconstructive surgery is required to repair the cleft opening. A common problem after reconstructive surgery is that of asymmetry, meaning one side of the mouth does not quite match the other.

How medical tattooing can compliment the surgery?

Following corrective surgery, the appearance of a cleft mouth can be further improved through the use of medical tattoo lip enhancement, producing a proportioned cupid's bow and symmetrical lip line thus improving the shape of the mouth.

How do we perform the medical tattoo procedure?

A private consultation

Before the procedure, the specialist will meet with the client for a consultation to discuss and demonstrate the ways in which we can determine the best colour match and shape and for the lips.

Anesthetics - Multitrepannic Collagen Actuation

We always apply topical anesthetic to reduce the prickling sensation associated with medical tattooing procedures.

As part of the first treatment, our consultant treats the scars running from the nose to the lip line with Multitrepannic Collagen Actuation. This is a specialist medical tattooing technique used to relax the tension in the cleft scar.

The infusion of pigment

In the second treatment, the desired lip shape is firstly produced by using a surgical marker. The cosmetic tattooing procedure will only commence once the patient has given the go ahead.

The actual pigment infusion process usually takes approximately one hour.

After a four week period, a follow up procedure - which is included in the initial cost - is normally advised. This enables our consultant to make final adjustments to the enhancement.
